A Different Kind of Gallery

Most galleries show many artists at once. The Showroom turns that inside out: for seven weeks at a time, the entire space belongs to one featured artist — a near-solo exhibition where you can experience the full breadth of a single creative voice, from signature large-scale works to intimate pieces, thoughtfully installed and personally presented.

Lana Nguyen builds her desert out of paper. Every cactus spine, every band of red rock, every cloud is a separate piece she paints by hand, cuts by hand, and assembles layer over layer on wood — then seals under a glass-clear resin so light falls into the work the way it falls into water. Layered brings seven years of that work together in one room for the first time: the three-panel nocturne Whispers of the Desert I, II, III, nearly six feet wide; the four-panel The Desert Unfolds; a series of 30-inch rounds; and Where Travelers Pause, in which something hovers over the buttes that is not in any field guide.

Born and raised in Kyiv, Nguyen is a Vietnamese-Ukrainian artist trained in design who found, in her words, "both home and an artistic identity in Arizona." Of the exhibition she writes: "We collect places, experiences, cultures, memories, and versions of ourselves along the way. Nothing exists as a single layer."

On view through September 21: the closing weeks of abstract expressionist Nina K's solo exhibition. The walls change the week of September 28.
